So you’re moving to Massachusetts! Before you start boxing up your belongings and looking for Massachusetts movers or storage companies it’s a good idea to learn something about your new home. Our short guide to the State of Massachusetts gives you information about the state and will help you plan for the big adventure.

Massachusetts – Location and Major Cities

Located on the North-Eastern coast of the United States, Massachusetts abuts Connecticut and Rhode Island to the South, whilst its western margins meet with New York State. To the North one find the states of New Hampshire and Vermont.

There are a number of big cities in Massachusetts, the largest being state capital Boston. Worcester has close to 200,000 residents and other major urban areas include; Springfield, Lowell, Cambridge and New Bedford.

Important Places in Massachusetts

Massachusetts has a cherished place in American history. Home to the first European settlers and the stage for the Boston Tea Party it’s no surprise to find that Massachusetts is packed with sites of historical significance. Chief amongst these is Cape Cod; not only the site of the Mayflower’s arrival on these shores but as its name might suggest, home to some of the finest seafood restaurants.

Massachusetts also houses two world-class universities; Harvard and the Massachusetts institute of Technology, both of which can be found in Cambridge. As well as the free university tours organized by the Harvard Visitor Center, the Harvard Museum of Natural History hosts exhibitions of over 12,000 species. Admission is free and the museum is open year round.

Massachusetts is home to a vibrant music scene and is famous for its Jazz festivals, including “bang on a can” which takes place throughout July and features a selection from the cream of contemporary Jazz musicians.

Finally, no guide (however brief) could fail to mention the legendary teams the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics.
