New Jersey – Location and Major Cities

The larger cities in New Jersey are; Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth, Edison, Toms River and the state capital Trenton.

Important Places in New Jersey

As one of the first states to declare independence from Great Britain, (two days prior to the Continental Congress ratifying the Declaration of Independence) New Jersey is full of historically significant sites be they battlefields, such as Princeton and Red Bank, or buildings like Nassau Hall which housed the US government from July to October 1783. You can also find Boxwood Hall the one time home of Elias Boudinot (President of the Continental Congress) who sold it to Jonathon Dayton a co-signee of the declaration of independence. Boxwood Hall also gains notoriety for serving George Washington his pre-inauguration lunch.

New Jersey is home to two of the world’s finest academic institutions; Princeton and Rutgers. Between them they boast 36 Nobel laureates from their staff and alumni, including Woodrow Wilson and Toni Morrison. Albert Einstein (how many other physicists are household names?) made his home in the United States and is counted amongst the past faculty at Princeton.

New Jersey is also well represented in the sports world. Professional teams in football, soccer, hockey, lacrosse and basketball call New Jersey their home. Indeed, so popular is New Jersey that both the New York Giants and the Jets are based in New Jersey. Regardless of the shape of the ball you like to see chased, New Jersey has a game to be seen.
