A more recent development saw the opening of the Katyn memorial, a monument in Exchange Place honoring the memory of those murdered in the Katyn forest massacre. The Colgate Clock, located in Jersey City faces Lower New York Bay and Lower Manhattan.

Museum space is limited in Jersey city but you can visit the Museum of Russian Art which mainly features Soviet-era non-conformist art and Jersey City’s five branch Public Library does house exhibitions and permanent collections. The Five Corners Branch focusses on music and performing arts, Miller Branch is home to the Afro-American Historical and Cultural Society, whilst archive material including photographs is housed at the New Jersey Room in the Main Library.

Popular Living Areas in Jersey City

Downtown – In recent years, the Downtown area has become gentrified and as a result has undergone a number of redevelopments, the most significant being at Newport and Exchange place both on the waterfront. Multi-use communities, these areas have been redeveloped to include residential apartment buildings, condos, hotels and office buildings. Additionally, Newport has also seen the construction of a marina, new schools, restaurants and a shopping mall.

Bergen-Lafayette – Located south-west of Liberty State Park, this neighborhood contains restored Victorian-era mansions  alongside gothic townhouses, pre-war and art-deco apartment buildings. This district also houses Lafayette Park, and parts of the district included in the Communipaw-Lafayette Historic District.

The Heights – Originally a part of Pavonia in the colony of New Netherland, this district is located in the north end of Jersey City and sits on the New Jersey Palisades overlooking Hoboken to the east and Meadowlands to the West. This neighborhood is home to Pershing Field Park which besides being a large, green open space has great facilities including; baseball fields, a swimming pool and an ice-rink.  Adjacent to the park lies reservoir #3 which despite its industrial sounding name is a state designated park and wetlands.
