Finally the Central Ward is populated by University Heights, The Coast/Lincoln Park, Springfield/Belmont and Seventh Avenue.

Important Places in Newark

Aside from the bars, restaurants and other nightspots found in any urban setting, Newark is home to a number of important cultural institutions, such as the New Jersey Performing Arts Centre which hosts the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and New Jersey State Opera.

Lincoln Park/The Coast – Historically a center of jazz and gospel music, as well as a series of nightclubs, this neighborhood is now home to the City Without Walls gallery, Newark Symphony Hall and the Theater Cafe. In keeping with its history, this neighborhood is home to the Museum of African American Music.

Broadway – Located on the west bank of the Passaic river, this neighborhood was the historic center of New Jersey’s Jewish community and houses the Jewish Museum of New Jersey. Newark Public Library’s North End Branch is also located in this district.

Vailsburg – This neighborhood offers a variety of housing styles including Dutch colonial and Victorian inspired buildings. South Orange Avenue in the commercial district underwent a significant street-level renovation in the early 21st century and many storefronts sport a fresh look. Vailsburg is known locally for its strong sense of community and many projects are run for the residents including three pre-school centers, four after school clubs a teen center and a seniors’ center. Two parks serve the neighborhood as well as a local branch of the Newark Public library.
