If Rhode Island moving is on your agenda then clearly you’ve got something to be excited about! Moving home can be an eagerly awaited adventure, especially if you’re headed in from a different part of the country or different part of the world. But before you get to the stage of looking for Rhode Island movers or Rhode Island storage companies, it’s good to know some information about the state you’ll be calling home. This page will give you the lo-down on Rhode Island to help you in forward planning.

Rhode Island – Location and Cities

Rhode Island and Providence Plantations (to give the state it’s full name), is the smallest state in the union and is situated in New England bordering the states of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Rhode Island also shares a nautical border with New York State; its southern coastline facing the Long Island Sound.

The state capital is the city of Providence, which is the also the largest city. Other prominent cities in Rhode Island are; Warwick, Cranston, Pawtucket, Coventry, Newport and Bristol.

Important Places in Rhode Island

Rhode Island was the first of the original 13 colonies to declare independence from British rule, some two months prior to the wave of declarations that swept New England and the last to adopt the constitution, only agreeing after being handed reassurances that this included a bill of rights.

Given the colonial history it’s not surprising to find that the state is littered with sites that are listed on the Register of Historic Places and there are many national parks run under state auspices which are a well worth a visit. These include; the State Capitol building which amongst other exhibits houses the original charter granted by Charles II in 1663.

The city of Newport in Rhode Island has the honor of hosting the US’s oldest surviving synagogue building, one that is still in use. An interesting event is the annual recitation of a letter received by the synagogue warden Moses Seixas from none other than George Washinton. One section of the letter reads;

“….the Government of the United States…gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance…May the children of the Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other Inhabitants; while every one shall sit in safety under his own vine and figtree, and there shall be none to make him afraid. May the father of all mercies scatter light and not darkness in our paths, and make us all in our several vocations useful here, and in his own due time and way everlastingly happy.”

The event attracts keynote speakers such as Supreme Court judges and academics.

The Newport Tower, a ruined building in Newport has a disputed history. Most experts believe the tower was a colonial-era windmill but a precise date of its construction has eluded both historians and scientific investigation. This has left the door open for the theory that the tower was built by Viking or Chinese sailors, although direct evidence for these theories are scant, depending on correlations between the construction and astronomical data.
