Long Island

Moving to Long Island? Moving home is an adventure that’s full of excitement and as the big day gets closer you are probably anticipating what lies ahead. Before you start looking for Long Island movers or Long Island storage, it’s important to gather some information about your new home. Our short guide will give you some useful information about Long Island to help you in planning ahead.

Long Island – Location and Neighborhoods

Long Island lies off the south-east coast of the State of New York. It is the largest Island in the United States and unsurprisingly (given location and size) also the most populated. Long Island is officially made up of four counties, two of which Queens and Brooklyn are boroughs of New York City (guides can be found here and here). Although all four Long Island districts are part of the NY Metropolitan Area, we’ll be focusing in this guide on Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Important Places in Long Island

Long Island is decidedly suburban and close as it is to the bustling streets of New York City, cultural opportunities, are few and far between without travelling the short distance to the Big Apple. What you will find on Long Island is an abundance of wildlife parks and nature reserves. One of the highlights is Oyster Bay Wildlife Refuge, a stretch of coastline consisting of coastal waters and marshlands which is home to a variety of wildlife including waterfowl, fish-eating birds, seals and other marine mammals, turtles and diamondback terrapins. Other National Wildlife Refuges that can be found on Long include; Amagansett, Conscience Point, Elizabeth A Morton, Fire Island National Seashore, Target Rock and Wertheim. Nassau County is home to Sagamore Hill, the one-time home of Theodore Roosevelt which is open to the public as the Theodore Roosevelt museum and offers guided tours. As of 2011, the site remained open but the house itself is undergoing a renovation. Other places of note in Long Island are Stony Brook University and the home of Long Island’s only current professional sports team, the New York Islanders who play in the NHL.

Popular Living Areas in Long Island

The Long Island districts of Nassau County and Suffolk County are largely suburban and there are thirteen towns covering the two districts. Brookhaven – This is the only town on the Island which stretches from the north shore to the south shore. It’s the home of Stony Brook University, the town’s major employer. The IRS and the Brookhaven National Laboratory are also counted amongst the major source of employment in this suburban town. East Hampton– If you’re living in East Hampton then the chances are that you’ve made it (at least in terms of the American Dream); East Hampton is known as a playground for the rich. Artists have also maintained a presence here, a trend begun by Jackson Pollack and his wife Lee Krasner. A museum the Pollack-Krasner House and Studio is sited at their former home. Another artist to have made their home in East Hampton is Andy Warhol. Every October East Hampton hosts its very own international film festival mainly featuring independent films.
